Australia is BIG. There are vast distances between the most southerly part of Tasmania and the tip of Cape York (~3700km as the crow flies). Almost 4000km separates Cape Byron and Steep Point. The mainland coastline alone is some 25800km in length. And, then there are Lord Howe, Norfolk, Christmas, Macquarie and many other islands that lie in the surrounding oceans. I want to see it all...
Australia today is a result of billions of years of planet forming forces, tens of thousands of years of first nation customs and management and a couple of hundred years of recent population explosion. Here's my take.
I'm Peter Wibberley. My passion is taking photos of Australia. I love to try and create Australian photographic art.
In all sorts of ways Australia amazes me many times a day. Hopefully my photographs are a way of giving something back.
Mum introduced me to cameras when I was 10 or so. In the eighties I was lucky enough to study photography from a technical point of view at Elizabeth College of TAFE in South Australia. Most of what I remember from my time studying helps me try and get technically correct photos. The words that play over and over in my head are "photography is painting with light".
All the images here are as the camera captures the light at the time the shot is taken. I get a great deal of satisfaction from recording the world as it is lit and arranged at that point in time.
If an image is altered it will only be in one or more of three ways
It's just Australia as is at the time I'm there with a camera.
I plan shots in terms of what I would like the image to look like, the best time of the day and year for the light to do its stuff, angles and positions and composition. Ultimately though, I am an observer, riding the 3rd rock from the sun, trying to be at the right place at the right time firing a shutter whilst the universe just does its thing.
I really enjoyed taking everyone of these photographs. If you like them, that's a genuine bonus for me. Hope I see you on the wallaby.
